John asks…
Is it worthwhile for a home appliance service agreement?
I bought a home about 3 months ago. I bought a new refridgerator, but the other appliances came with the house. Now, each of my appliances seem to be falling apart! My home inspector recommended a home appliance service agreement for at least one year, until I become more familiar with the condition of the appliances.
One he recommended is $32 a month, and includes the cost of labor on all repairs for the refridgerator, stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer. I also called, and since my refridgerator is brand new, they could transfer the service warranty from the refridgerator to the garbage disposal, if I chose. Any parts that would be required for a repair would be at a discount (10 – 40%). And you can cancel it at anytime. After 1 year of being on the plan, if an appliance breaks beyond reasonable repair, the company will replace it.
Thoughts on this? Currently, both my disposal and dryer are not working! Also, they said the cost of repairing these two appliances can be included in the service plan (no stipulation about ‘pre-existing repairs’).
Any experiences with these?

Extended warranty is a good thing appliances parts are not cheap and some companies are very expensive. It is totally worth it. I deal with these companies all week long. They are mostly good.
